Day 5 - Saturday: "Called and Sent in
Jesus' Name"
The youth were given part of the morning to get
caught up on sleep from the very full day on Friday.
This was very much appreciated.
Late morning we made our way to the convention
center for our learning session - the Krews Learning
Center. Our Bible Study was on calling and vocation
using familiar stories from scripture and how they
relate to our calling as people of God.
This time was actually welcomed and helpful to our
youth and adults as we look at how God works in our
lives through other people and also to help put the
events of the week into perspective. It also was
good to mix and mingle with a couple of other youth
groups and hear their stories from the week -
especially their Servant Life projects yesterday.
Over a nice, quiet lunch the youth and adults
continued to reflect back on the week as it begins
to wind down. They have been amazed at the size and
the sheer numbers of the gathering, but the most
growth had occurred within the group itself. The
youth feel closer to the adults and vice versa.
The afternoon was spent at the Riverwalk looking for
that perfect souvenir to bring home.
Tonight's dome session began with a special greeting
from New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin. He was incredibly
thankful for what was accomplished and represented
this week. He said he had never seen that many
gathered together to do so much good since Katrina.
Then Presiding Bishop Hanson read letter of
greetings and thanks from President
Obama. The youth of our church caught some attention
this week.
The theme this night was jazz. Jazz is about
improvisation and going and doing what and where the
Spirit moves us. This evening we were also in a
powerful way to share the light of Christ. Each
person, one at a time shared the "Light" of their
cell phone so after a while the whole Superdome was
bathed in light. It was a preparation to re-enter
our lives at home.
Peace.
