I have the privilege to serve as an Associate
Chaplain at Lexington Medical Center, and every
month we have a lunch meeting for continuing
education and fellowship among the chaplains.
Last month we heard from one of our own who is a
retired Episcopal priest who in the mid 1990's
was a hospital chaplain in downtown Oklahoma
City. One morning he found himself serving in
the bull's-eye of the first terrorist attack on
American soil.
Among all the horrors, death, and destruction of
that day that were witnessed, one amazing thing
did happen. A community was created and
strengthened. Restaurants came together to feed
relief and medical workers for free. People came
from far and wide to offer their services.
People laid aside difference of race, politics,
and denomination to pray for and help rebuild a
wounded city.
While we do not live in a war zone, we are
surrounded by so many in our midst who are
wounded looking for a place of healing. Many of
us spend hours online "connected" to one another
on Facebook, Twitter, or text message, but at
the same time crave a more intimate connection
than the Internet can provide.
I've been studying a lot about the dynamics of
young adults today, and one thing that can be
said is that group, as well as most adults today
are not necessarily searching for a
congregation, but a community in which they can
belong ? there is a BIG difference. Many are
searching for an authentic place to be loved, to
share their gifts with others, to get behind a
cause, and make a difference in the world.
To be an authentic, deliberate, called and sent
community gathered in the name of Jesus. That
sounds pretty biblical to me. |
