This past July, Dr. Patrick Hawkins, our
Organist-Choirmaster performed a recital of modern
solo and duo organ music for the Pre-Convention of
the Far-West Regional American Guild of Organists
Convention held in Phoenix, Arizona. At the recital,
Dr. Hawkins played the world premiere of Benjamin
Lees' Collage, which was commissioned by Dr.
Hawkins and which has just been published by Boosey
& Hawkes, Inc. The composer, a former faculty member
at the Julliard School of Music in New York City and
is who is considered to be one America's leading
classical composers, was in attendance with his wife
and family members. Other attendees included
Frederick Swann, the international organ recitalist
and former Organist at the Crystal Cathedral and the
Riverside Church in Manhattan, and David Schelat, a
nationally known composer of choral and organ music.
Later in the week, Dr. Hawkins co-presented a
workshop to nearly one hundred organists at the
convention on his research into avoiding performance
related injuries during practice sessions by using a
combination of cardiovascular exercise and weight
training specifically designed for musicians. His
research has recently been published in The
Diapason magazine. In 2010, Patrick Hawkins is
scheduled to perform recitals for the Greater
Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists
at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church in West Columbia, and
at St. Helena's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, South
Carolina. |
